The phrase “next major screen universe” usually appears after a successful movie, not before one.
That is worth remembering when evaluating MAYA.
No amount of concept art, lore, franchise planning, or cross-media ambition can substitute for the thing that creates a durable audience: one story that works. Every large screen property eventually gets discussed as intellectual property infrastructure, but viewers meet it as characters, scenes, emotions, and choices.
So the useful question is not whether MAYA can be declared the next giant franchise today. It is whether the world contains the ingredients that have allowed successful science fiction franchises to keep expanding after their first entry.
A franchise needs a story engine, not just a map
Many fictional worlds are enormous on paper and surprisingly narrow in practice.
They contain continents, dynasties, languages, timelines, and thousands of named events, yet almost every meaningful conflict still circles the same villain or bloodline.
A durable science fiction universe needs several independent engines that can generate stories.
MAYA: Seed Takes Root provides the first novel-length entry into the MAYA Narrative Universe. The setting has at least four: a living planetary information network, predictive governance, seven sentient species with different perceptual worlds, and the social institutions built around tethering, chhavis, debt, and the Trials.
Each can create conflict without requiring the same protagonist.
That is a more promising foundation than lore volume alone.
Why MAYA has room to become a screen universe
The internet grows from trees.
A franchise benefits from an image that can be understood instantly and investigated slowly. The Maya trees have that property.
At first they are striking biological technology. Then they become social infrastructure. Then surveillance infrastructure. Then predictive infrastructure. Then a place where entertainment, memory, aspiration, and identity converge.
The same object can therefore mean different things in different stories.
A child may experience a Maya tree as play. A politician may see behavioral data. A dissident may see unavoidable infrastructure. A bereaved family may see a route to a chhavi. A scientist may see ecology. A Divya may see a model of the future.
That multiplicity is franchise fuel.
Seven species make the world horizontally expandable.
A trilogy can deepen one protagonist. Seven species can widen a world.
Each species gives writers a reason to revisit basic institutions from another biological and cultural angle. How does a shared city work for different bodies? What does medicine look like? What does a courtroom treat as reliable evidence? Which species dominate particular forms of labor or knowledge, and why? Which differences are biological, which are political, and which have become cultural stories people tell about biology?
The answer should not be a rigid species guide. The value is conflict and perspective.
A science fiction franchise grows when the audience realizes the world can be entered from several directions.
Prediction is a renewable source of plot.
Predictive power creates stories because it never eliminates uncertainty. It changes where uncertainty lives.
If a system predicts a crime, does prevention create the crime? If a ruler sees ten catastrophic futures and one survivable one, what is permissible to reach it? If people know they are modeled, how do they behave differently? If someone is invisible to the model, are they free or merely excluded? If the model works differently across seven species, whose behavior becomes legible first?
Those are crime stories, political stories, family stories, philosophical stories, and thrillers waiting inside the same mechanism.
The same predictive system can also create conflicts at very different scales. A local story might turn on one person gaming a model. A regional story might involve a community whose data has been systematically misread. A planetary story could ask what happens when several species respond differently to the same intervention and the forecast begins producing the instability it was meant to prevent. The world does not need a new superweapon each time. It needs a new relationship to the same infrastructure.
That is much stronger franchise potential than a technology that exists mainly to solve problems.
Variety’s framing supports the cross-media ambition without proving the outcome
Variety’s interview on building MAYA for the digital age describes Tumbbad director Anand Gandhi and Zain Memon’s project as a transmedia mythology built around contemporary conflicts involving truth, control, innovation, and inequality.
That is important context because MAYA is not being retrofitted into transmedia IP after the fact. The wider project has been conceived across formats.
But intention is not achievement.
The best science fiction universes became durable because audiences wanted to return. A world has to earn that desire one format at a time.
The next Dune-scale science fiction universe cannot be appointed through positioning. It has to demonstrate the same kind of causal density and rewatchable, rereadable depth that makes older universes keep generating interpretation.
Books, games and audio can test different dimensions of the same world
MAYA already has a useful structural advantage: games and audio are not merely promotional wrappers around a film that already exists.
The novel can provide interiority and deep causal explanation. The audiobook can make language, voice, rhythm, and species identity more immediate. Trials of MAYA can turn parts of the universe into choices, tactical systems, and competitive play.
Games and audio therefore test whether the setting maintains identity when the audience’s mode of engagement changes.
A living world built for books, games, audio, lore, and cinema is an attractive proposition only if each form does something native to itself.
That is how cross-media work can make a world deeper rather than simply more visible.
Cinema would have to establish the visual constitution of Neh
The first major screen adaptation would carry an unusual burden. It would define how millions of viewers imagine Neh.
Production design would need to establish rules that future stories can inherit without becoming trapped by them. Biology should shape architecture. Living technology should look grown, maintained, repaired, and vulnerable rather than merely decorated with organic textures. Species bodies should affect space. The Maya network should feel desirable as well as threatening.
This is why a Cinematic science fiction novel does not automatically become cinematic through expensive imagery.
The design has to express the world model.
MAYA reads like a science fiction epic built for the biggest possible screen. The more important challenge is whether it can also work in a close-up: one body tethering to one tree, one person realizing they have been modeled, one family confronting what a chhavi means, one character deciding whether a predicted future justifies present harm.
Franchises live in both scales.
The project has recognizable visual signatures
MAYA’s visual identity can grow from a small number of repeated rules.
Tree networks instead of server farms. Biological interfaces instead of glass screens. Species-specific architecture instead of one human default. Predictive images that lead reality rather than simply replay it. Ecology that doubles as information infrastructure.
Those signatures are useful because the audience can recognize the world without every scene needing a landmark.
The best science fiction universes have this quality. A corridor, tool, uniform, skyline, interface, or piece of sound design can tell you where you are before the title card does.
The first movie should resist franchise behavior
Paradoxically, the best way for MAYA to become one of the durable science fiction franchises would be for its first film to stop worrying about being a franchise for two hours.
No excessive setup for future heroes. No dangling encyclopedia entries that exist only to tease later stories. No assumption that viewers care about the mythology because the creators do.
Start with the cleanest emotional conflict and let the world widen around it.
If audiences care about Yachay, Kshar, Ayn, and the choices produced by prediction and control, the unexplored world becomes exciting. If they do not, a hundred future-project announcements will not matter.
A universe also needs tonal range
One hidden advantage of MAYA’s systems is that they can support stories with different emotional temperatures. Prediction can power a paranoid thriller, but tethering can also support friendship, entertainment, romance, family ritual, or comedy. Species difference can create political conflict, but it can also create ordinary misunderstandings and forms of intimacy.
That tonal range matters because a franchise that can only be solemn becomes exhausting, while a franchise that treats every part of its world as interchangeable loses identity. The same rules should produce joy and danger. A Maya tree should be capable of hosting play in one story and revealing surveillance in another without becoming a different invention.
This is one reason the science fiction universe has potential beyond a single trilogy arc. Institutions that people depend on in everyday life create more tonal possibilities than weapons that only appear during crises.
What would make MAYA genuinely franchise-ready
Three things would matter most.
First, the film has to preserve the system-level cause and effect that distinguishes the novel. Second, the species and biological technology need a visual identity that feels coherent rather than merely elaborate. Third, later stories must be allowed to change genre and perspective while remaining recognizably inside Neh.
That would make a book adaptation the beginning of a screen language rather than a one-time translation.
The phrase best science fiction universes usually gets applied retrospectively. The universes earn it by surviving new protagonists, new eras, new media, and new interpretations.
Could MAYA reach that level? The raw materials are there. The deciding factor will be execution: whether the first screen story makes viewers feel that Neh contains more life than one story can hold.
A final measure is whether audiences begin asking questions the story did not require them to ask. What does childhood look like for another species? How does a region without the same access to Maya function? What historical crisis normalized tethering? What happens to art, crime, religion, or romance in a society where models of people persist after death? Curiosity of that kind is the earliest sign that a setting has become bigger in the audience’s mind than the plot that introduced it. It is also the point where future stories stop feeling like extensions and start feeling like discoveries, because the audience has begun building its own mental map of unanswered possibilities.
